Research Guide for LLM and Foreign Exchange Students: Find Library Resources

This guide includes Internet links, research tips, and lists of books that UC Law SF LLM students might find useful. We hope you enjoy your time at UC Law SF. If you need help with any library or research project, feel free to contact librarian Dean Deane

General Library Resources

Study Aids
  • Unlike assigned casebooks, study guides provide helpful short summaries of cases and explanations of important legal theories. •
  • Three main types:
    • Subject Outlines – help you understand and organize concepts
    • Case Summaries – help you understand the class case readings
    • Questions & Answers – you can quiz yourself to make sure you understand the various subjects covered in class
  • They can be very helpful as you prepare for class and for final exams

4th Floor Library Circulation Desk

  • Borrow your class casebooks (for up to 3 hours at a time):

    • Library has one copy of each assigned textbook on Course Reserve

  • Borrow Study Guides for 3 hours 

  • Borrow other library books for 30 days by showing your student ID 

  • English & Foreign Language Dictionaries available for you to borrow

  • Borrow laptops, phone and computer chargers, flash drives, headphones, VGA adapters, umbrellas, and bike lights

  • The Circulation Desk is staffed by UC Law SF Students

4th Floor Library Reference Desk

  • Research Librarians – Available Monday to Thurs (10:00am-3:00pm) to help you with legal research questions. (Example: Help with research for seminar paper.)
  • Borrow law dictionaries in various languages.

Computers, WiFi & The I.T. Help Desk

  • Computer workstations on the 4th floor are available for student use
    • They are set up with Microsoft Office and other word processing software
    • Login with your UC Law SF username and password
    • Your desktop will save for your personal use each time you login
  • You can borrow a laptop at the 4th floor Circulation Desk
  • Wi-Fi is available everywhere in the Library (Ask at the circulation desk for login info).
  • If you have questions about your personal computer, smart phone, tablet, campus computers, UC Law SF networks, or other campus computing resources, email the UC Law SF IT (Information Technology) Help Desk or ask for assistance in person at the:

Printing, Scanning & Copying

  • Printing, copying & scanning is available throughout the UC Law SF campus on Xerox multifunction networked printers using your UC Law SF ID.
  • There are several printers on the 4th & 5th floors of the Library.
  • The printers on campus require you to set up an account online, upload money in advance, and print through the online website.
    • Black & white printers (4th & 5th floors) / Color printer (5th floor)
    • You can print from Lexis for free on the Library’s 4th floor Lexis printers

Study Space, Study Rooms & Classrooms

  • There are large study tables on the 4th, 5th & 6th floors for UC Law SF students
  • There are study rooms available for student use in the library
    • The study rooms cannot be reserved.
  • The internal elevator goes to the 6th floor classrooms and study areas

Safety & Security

  • DON’T leave your laptop or any valuables unattended on campus.
  • DON’T walk in the neighborhood staring at your mobile phone. BE ALERT.
