Introduction to English Law Research Guide

Welcome to the English Law Research Guide. This guide focuses on modern English law, which governs England and Wales. Please note that Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate legal systems and are not covered in this guide.

General Information about English Law

English law is unique in several ways:

  • No Written Constitution: Unlike many other countries, England does not have a single written constitution.
  • No Official Codification: English statutes are not officially codified in a single document.
  • Parliamentary Sovereignty: Any statute passed by Parliament is inherently valid and cannot be reviewed by the courts. This means that the constitutionality of a statute is not a matter for judicial review; only Parliament has the authority to amend the law.

This guide aims to provide guidance on finding reliable sources so you can get a comprehensive overview of the key aspects of English law, and do complex research on specific legal topics.
