Journal Resources: Library Resources for Preemption Checks and Source Pulls

Guide to library resources and policies relevant to student journal editors.

Books: How to Find & Get Them

Step 1. Search for the book by title, in quotation marks, in the "Books & More" search box on the library homepage

Step 2. If available, scan the pages you need or check the book out to your journal and leave it on the Law Journal shelves at the north end of the fifth floor stacks.

Step 3. If the library catalog shows the book is checked out, put a hold on it. To place a hold on a book, click on the "Sign In" link at the upper right corner of the catalog, select "UC Law SF Login" and login using your UC Law SF credentials. After signing in, you will see a link to "Request Item" in the catalog record for the book.

Step 4. If we don't own it:

  • Check WorldCat or the SFPL catalog to see if it's available at the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library (one block away). Go there to scan the needed pages for free.
  • If it's not available at SFPL's main branch, use the "Request item through Interlibrary Loan" link in the WorldCat record to request the item through ILL. You’ll get an email when the book arrives; it will be held behind the Circulation Desk for you to use in the library to scan or photocopy pages.

Remember:

  • Interlibrary Loan borrowing can take up to 2 weeks for book requests, so plan ahead.
  • We are not able to borrow ebooks through interlibrary loan - only physical books.
